Michael Lacey Comments on Trump’s Pardon of Joe Arpaio

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin are no strangers to controversy. As the owners of The Phoenix New Times, they targeted one of the most controversial figures in politics: Joe Arpaio. The result of their investigation of Arpaio resulted in the exposure of some of Arpaio’s hidden assets. In turn, Arpaio sent his deputies to the journalists homes and had them arrested. Lacey and Larkin walked away from the ordeal with nearly 4 million dollars. The entire incident made national headlines.

Since winning the settlement, Lacey and Larkin have not hit the brakes. They no longer own The Phoenix New Times, but a new newspaper has been formed in its place: Front Page Confidential. Their new paper is no less controversial than their previous. Front Page Confidential also has Joe Arpaio in its figurative scope. Lacey and Larkin are using the paper as a way to educate and inform the American population about corrupt politicians like Joe Arpaio.

Who is Joe Arpaio?

Joe Arpaio is a former sheriff in Arizona, specifically Maricopa County. As sheriff, he lead Arizona down a path of destruction that is unmatched by any other local politician. He intends to break his own record by running for a Senate seat in 2018.

He has been accused of negligent homicide and assault. A woman was chained to a bed during pregnancy while in his care, and people have committed suicide while in his jails. One of his biggest immortal decisions happened only a year after he was first elected. He created a facility called Tent City that he described as a modern day concentration camp. Victims of Arpaio finally believed they had received justice when Arpaio was convicted of criminal contempt of court in 2017. It wasn’t long until they lost all hope for the justice system, however. Donald Trump pardoned Arpaio only 3 months after his conviction. Arpaio didn’t spend a single day in jail.

Larkin and Lacey React

After news broke of the pardon, the nation was outraged. It was bad enough that out of all the accused charges put forth against Arpaio, contempt of court was the only thing that stuck. It is a spit in the face to the victims of Arpaio that The President would pardon someone such as him.

“This is the perfect marriage of two corrupt individuals,” said Michael Lacey, referring to the pardoning. Lacey contributes the pardon to Trump’s low approval ratings. The pardoning was just an attempt for Trump to hold on to the remaining supporters he has. “Trump’s approval rating is down around 30 percent,” Lacey said. “That 30 percent is going to like what he did.”

In addition to Front Page Confidential, the journalistic duo created The Frontera Fund. The fund is an attempt to counteract the damage Arpaio has done to the Hispanic community in Arizona. Lacey and Larkin support a large number of charities through The Frontera Fund.

Founders of the Frontera Fund, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin Created a Justice Movement from an Unjust Incident

Standing up for yourself, let alone others in the face of intimidation is something that takes a lot of confidence. Fortunately for the residents of Maricopa County in Phoenix, Arizona, journalists Michael and Jim have confidence in abundance.

The two have for the last four years put their money and expertise towards fighting for the rights and freedoms of the disenfranchised in the community through their Frontera Fund.

Owing to the nature of their work as journalists, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin had over the course of their careers been involved in a few incidents with the sheriff’s office in the county. However, one incident on 18th October 2007 completely stood out.

The two journalists were removed from their homes by officers from the county’s sheriff office, placed under arrest and held in two different cells. A few days earlier the two had defied a subpoena order they considered illegal.

Essentially, therefore, their arrest was unlawful. Following widespread public outcry, the two were released less than a day after being arrested.

However, knowing that their rights had been violated, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin decided to sue the country and Joe Arpaio, the sheriff. After a six-year court battle, a ruling was made in favor of the two journalists which led the county to issue a settlement of $3.7 million.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were aware that they were not the only people subjected to unlawful treatment by the county and the sheriff. In fact, from their years of journalistic work, they knew that undocumented immigrants in Arizona were often unfairly targeted by the sheriff.

Since most of these immigrants did not know their rights, injustices were often meted to them without legally fighting back. Consequently, Lacey and Larkin unselfishly decided to put their entire settlement money towards helping such disadvantaged groups. Thus, the highly acclaimed Frontera Fund was formed. One of the organizations that the Frontera Fund supports is the Arizona Justice Project. The organization is equally passionate about justice and thus provides legal services to those in the state that lack the resources to source them for themselves.

Unfortunately, the justice system in the state, and indeed the rest of the country, still has a lot of inefficiencies. Consequently, some of those convicted by the courts are in fact innocent. The Arizona Justice Project is committed to ensuring that these wrongs are quickly rectified.

Larkin and Lacey in human rights advocacy

Civil rights ensure that all persons enjoy their fundamental rights inclusively but not limited to freedom of expression and association. Human rights dedicate their effort to protecting all human rights and ending all forms of human rights abuse around the globe. Migrant rights on the other hand help to protect immigrants and immigrant workers. Read more: Michael Lacey | Twitter

In a nutshell, civil, human and immigrant groups were formed to help fight and advocate for the justice and equality of all people especially the minorities and those deemed to be too weak to fight for their rights and freedoms.

There are myriad of such groups including but not limited to; The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights. Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund and the Migrants Rights International.

These organizations mostly concentrate their efforts in fighting all forms of discrimination against all races of humanity and assert concerted efforts in restoring and maintaining human dignity. These 0rganisations believe in the equality of people whether indigenous or immigrants for they view the world as one social village. The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights works as an advocacy group that focuses on achieving human, civil and labor rights for immigrants. Its formation was funded by the Ford Foundation to educate the immigrants about the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.

This act declared it’s illegal to hire undocumented workers and was deemed as the base for exploiting and abusing workers. CHIRLA works as an agent towards the realization of the right for free people mobility. Its effective strategy is by changing public opinion and building power while changing policy for full civil, immigrant and human rights.

Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund is another leading organization that advocates for civil, human and immigrant rights. It was founded by two journalists Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin following their arrest by the Maricopa County Sherriff Joe Arpaio while in their quest of defending the rights of the minorities and immigrants. They were jailed after proving that the grand jury proceedings sought articles covering the sheriff.

They sued the county and were awarded a settlement of 3.75 million dollars which they dedicated to migrant rights organizations throughout Arizona. The group is concerned with the implementation of all the guarantees of the constitution and achieving equal justice for all regardless of the immigration status.

Their strategy is challenging the legality of any law that tends to deny immigrants the right to the judicial process.

The Migrants Rights International is another group that advocates for the civil, human and immigrant rights. It is a non –governmental organization in special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

Its foundation emanated from appreciating the emergence of globalization, migration and human rights as central social, economic and political challenge since the turn of the century.

It works to suppress the appalling rise in violence against migrants and increasingly restrictive government measures that undermine the fundamental human rights of millions of migrants. The organization has been able to bring together dozens of local, national, regional and international groups from all over the continents to fight for the migrants.

Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey Launch new Newspaper

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin are the journalists behind the newly created Front Page Confidential. The duo met in college where they worked on the school newspaper, and after college Larkin and Lacey worked together at The Phoenix New Times. Now, as owners of Front Page Confidential, they focus on political guided content.

Of course, Front Page Confidential isn’t Larkin and Lacey’s first step into the world of political journalism. At their previous paper, the journalists they investigated Sheriff Joe Arpaio and eventually paid the price. Joe Arpaio grew tired of their investigative pieces; Arpaio eventually found a way to have them arrested.

Joe Arpaio likely believed the arrest to be justified, but his actions ended up being illegal. Lacey and Larkin ended up winning a lawsuit when they claimed Arpaio violated their first amendment rights.

It is with the money from the lawsuit that Michael and Jim were able to create Front Page Confidential, and this is why they have been so politically motivated. They want to keep Joe Arpaio out of office. They are trying to accomplish this by simply writing the truth. Joe Arpaio has left a trail of destruction behind him for 20 years in Arizona, and he intends to take his efforts to congress. Lacey and Larkin intend to put an end to Arpaio’s Senate run with their journalistic efforts.

In addition to putting pen to page Larkin and Lacey are performing more diligent duties. They have created The Frontera Fund to counteract the damage done by Joe Arpaio. The Frontera Fund donates money to charitable causes such as the ACLU.
