Rick Smith: The Man behind Securus Technologies’ Success

Rick Smith was appointed as the CEO of Securus Technologies, a prison technology company on 23rd June 2008. He is a man with tenacity and ambition and has been very influential in expanding the services of the company through acquisitions and development of the state-of-the-art prison technologies. With his focus on excellence, he has applied his diverse experience to provide innovative initiatives for the company in many key areas of the industry. Through Rick Smith’s efforts, the company has proven itself to be a formidable competitor in the prisons and corrections industry.

Mr. Smith has all it takes to ensure that Securus continues to enjoy its competitive advantage in this important industry. He has attained a wide range of skills through the years having worked in different companies prior to joining Securus Technologies. Rick worked at Frontier Information in different areas such as I.T, Finance, operations, business development to name but a few. With all this on his hands, he has been able to apply such skills to Securus which has seen the company register tremendous growth. Between 1972 and 1998, he also held different positions at Global Crossing North America which included the controller of the company and its chief information officer.

Earlier on, Rick Smith had worked as the CEO of Eschelon Telecom Inc. During his tenure at the company, he managed to grow the company’s portfolio from merely $30 million to approximately $350 million. He also worked at EBITDA growing its revenues to $80 million representing a compound annual growth of 48%. Mr. Smith’s success at Eschelon can be compounded in the company’s successful IPO in 2005 where he was very influential in facilitating the offer. He has also held board memberships at Integra Telecom Co. Ltd and Eschelon Telecom Inc.

Apart from his experience, Rick is also well learned. He holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the State University of New York and a Master’s degree in Engineering from the same institution. Mr. Smith also has a Master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Rochester. Rick also has an Associate’s degree from Rochester Institute of Technology.

In 2015, he managed to secure a deal with JPay, a leading firm in the provision of email, electronic payments, entertainment and educational apps to the corrections market. This deal saw Securus Technologies become a leader in the provision of prison solutions that correction facilities and agencies may require in operating modern jails and prisons effectively. In the deal, Mr. Smith was given the authority to run JPay as Securus’ wholly owned subsidiary.

Under his leadership, Securus has made various strategic investments. For instance, between 2013 and 2016, the company invested over $600 million in technologies, patents, and acquisitions. This investment has enabled the company to acquire many companies as well has developed different high-end technologies for the prisons industry.
